How Getting Fired From My Job Launched My Own Online Business

Have you ever been burned out? Well, that is what happened to me years ago. I had this dead-end job which I really hated. And then I got kicked out of the job. The reason was I was burned out and my boss no longer liked me. Really, it was a blessing in disguise. After all, the job was making me puke – so getting out of it was a good thing.

The immediate issue was: how can I pay my bills. Since I had already spent years of my life getting educated, I really didn’t want to go back to school. Also I needed money right away.

OK, I had a computer and an Internet connection. Plus I had some idea of how to make web pages. As I browsed the Web, I understood there were many business opportunities online which showed some profit potential. It was even possible to get my feet wet with no product of my own.

My first step was to use AdSense on my web sites to make some cash. After a while, I came to the conclusion that affiliate marketing was more lucrative. This means you get paid commissions by promoting products for someone else.

One example is Clickbank. Clickbank serves as payment processor for thousands of merchants who sell some virtual product online. It is very easy to become an affiliate for any of those products. Then you collect good commission money when people buy stuff using your affiliate links.

Usually you get at least 50% of the product selling price for your marketing effort. Imagine for example an ebook, on the subject of making money online. Maybe it sells for 47 dollars. In this case your payout may be more than $25 per sale you refer. From what I’ve seen, you can make enormous amounts of dollars by simply promoting well-chosen products from Clickbank.

Personally, my greatest cash cow has been web hosting plans. I set up a simple web site with reviews of a couple of web hosts, and collected commissions when people signed up through my affiliate links. The only problem with this approach is the stiff competition. A number of people try to promote web hosting companies they actually know nothing about. This turns would-be customers away. As for myself, I do my research and only promote hosting providers I know have a good reputation.
