In these lean economic times, being an employee may not cut it if you are providing for a family and at the same time, are planning to save enough to grant you an early retirement cruising around the world. Problem is, if you quit to find a better paying job, it might take months, even years to find one. That is if you are lucky. One of the best things for you to do then is build your own business. And one of the easiest business to build from the ground up is an online business.

Just like starting any actual business, when going into online business, you must first know what it is you are going to sell. Do a little brainstorming. Will it be a service you can offer? Or will it be an actual physical product? If it’s a product, will it just be downloadable or will it be something you would have to ship? Many questions, but all you must answer. Make sure that what you intend to sell is something you know well enough about.

So now that you have your own product, one that you know well enough to be considered an expert, what do you do next? Of course you must have a business plan. A plan of attack. But that goes without saying, so the next thing you should go after is building your site. The best start is to buy your own domain name to use for your website. But if you are really on a budget and looking to start as cheap as possible, you can also start using free blogs.

So, with your blog and/or web site in place, the next logical step is to put in the content of your site. You can do this by either hiring a writer to do it, or if you are on a budget, doing it yourself. Be sure though to optimize each page of your site and each article in your content. If you don’t know how this works, consider learning SEO, or search engine optimization, your next step. But with or without SEO, when doing the content of your site, always make sure that the quality of what you write, or have written, is of the highest quality. This is to give the impression to your clients that you are a professional who knows what he or she is doing, and not just some hack with a computer.

You have a product, you have web site or blog to sell it. Now what? Well, you can continually upgrade your site, adding programs, and applications. Adding clickbank is a good idea to take care of purchases and orders. But the most important thing to do next, is to make sure your site gets the proper SEO treatment. This is to market your site and make it easily accessible to everyone. So as I mentioned before, learn SEO and find out all the ways it can help you and your business. If you don’t have the time, hire an SEO expert. But whatever you opt to do, make sure you have SEO done on your site.
